PCB Powerfully Denies Rumors: Jason Gillespie’s Coaching Role Safe, Confident in Aaqib Javed’s Support | Cricket News
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly denied media claims suggesting that former fast bowler Aaqib Javed is set to replace Jason Gillespie as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team in all formats. These reports emerged after the team’s series loss to Australia in the ongoing T20I matches, where Pakistan trails 0-2. The final T20I is scheduled for Monday.
Contrary to speculation about Gillespie’s departure, the PCB reiterated through a tweet on Sunday that Gillespie will continue coaching the team for the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa in December. Interestingly, the PCB’s announcement did not mention the three T20I matches against South Africa, which occur on the same tour.
Rumors of Gillespie’s replacement surfaced following reports by ESPNCricinfo, which suggested that Gillespie was being phased out after seeking a pay raise to fully take over white-ball teams. This reportedly led the PCB to consider removing him from red-ball duties as well.
The Pakistan cricket team has been navigating through a challenging period, marked by the sudden exit of coach Gary Kirsten right before the Australia tour. Gillespie stepped in as an interim coach for the white-ball formats, including three ODIs and three T20Is. Under his guidance, Pakistan faced a historic home series defeat to Bangladesh but rebounded by winning a Test series against England, their first at home in three-and-a-half years. They also clinched their first ODI series victory in Australia in 22 years, although they faltered in the T20I series.
The PCB remains dedicated to stabilizing its coaching framework, affirming confidence in Gillespie’s leadership for the upcoming Test matches.
