Breaking: Meghalaya CM Sangma’s Bold Move – NPP Withdraws Support, Shaking BJP-Led Manipur Government
The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur as of Sunday, November 17. This decision comes amid growing ethnic violence in the region, as MLA residences and churches have reportedly come under attack.
In a letter to BJP National President JP Nadda, Sangma expressed deep concerns regarding Chief Minister Biren Singh’s administration, highlighting its failure to restore peace amid the escalating crisis. Sangma stated, “The situation in Manipur has spiralled out of control, with innocent lives lost and communities suffering. We strongly believe that the current leadership has failed to address these critical issues.” As a result, the NPP decided to formally withdraw its support from the Manipur government.
The NPP legislators who have left the coalition include Sheikh Noorul Hassan, Khuraijam Loken Singh, Irengbam Nalini Devi, Thongam Shanti Singh, Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, N. Kayisii, and Janghemlung Panmei. Despite this setback, the BJP-led government retains stability, holding a majority with 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The BJP continues to enjoy the backing of regional allies, including the Naga People’s Front (NPF), which has five MLAs, along with support from one JD(U) legislator and three Independent MLAs.
The state of Manipur is currently grappling with ongoing ethnic violence that has persisted for over a year. Thousands have been displaced, and the situation remains volatile, with recent tensions reaching critical levels after violence from the Jiribam district spilled into the capital city of Imphal. The developments underscore the urgent need for effective governance and resolution to the underlying issues driving the unrest.
