Unyielding Discontent: NPP’s Bold Withdrawal from Manipur Government Over Failed Peace Efforts
Sheikh Noorul Hassan, an MLA from the National People’s Party (NPP) and National Secretary for Political Affairs, has voiced significant disapproval of Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh, accusing his administration of failing to restore peace and stability in the state.
Citing a letter from NPP’s national president, Conrad K Sangma, Hassan criticized the severe decline in law and order under the current regime. “Under CM N Biren Singh, the state’s government has been ineffective in re-establishing peace and normalcy, leading to widespread chaos,” Hassan stated. He emphasized that the ongoing violence over the past 18 months has severely damaged public trust. “The general public, now questioning our support for the BJP-led government, has lost faith,” he noted.
In response to the chaotic situation and public sentiment, the NPP decided to withdraw support from the BJP-led Manipur government. Hassan described this move as a response to the people’s demands, not just an internal party decision. “As part of the NDA, we felt urged to align our actions with the people’s wishes and the current circumstances,” he concluded.
The NPP, led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, officially withdrew support from Manipur’s ruling coalition due to dissatisfaction with the state’s handling of ongoing ethnic violence and deteriorating law and order. Sangma’s communiqué to BJP’s national president JP Nadda outlined the party’s decision to withdraw its seven MLAs from the coalition. Expressing grave concerns, the letter criticized CM N Biren Singh’s government for its failure to restore normalcy amid the ongoing crisis.
“The situation in Manipur has spiraled out of control, claiming innocent lives and causing community suffering. We strongly believe the current leadership has failed to address these crucial issues,” the letter declared.
