Triumphant Odisha Dominates Haryana 5-1 to Clinch Senior Men’s Hockey National Championship Glory
Odisha claimed a resounding victory in the Senior Men’s National Hockey Championship, securing their third National title with a decisive 5-1 win over Haryana in the final on Saturday. The highlight of the match was Shilanand Lakra’s hat-trick, which underscored Odisha’s dominant performance. Lakra, an India international, stamped his authority on the game by scoring three times in the closing quarter, with goals in the 48th, 57th, and 60th minutes, delivering a masterclass that left Haryana unable to respond effectively.
Odisha, under strong leadership from their coach and captain, asserted their dominance early on. Rajat Akash Tirkey set the tone by opening the scoring in the 11th minute, with a skillful finish from close range. Pratap Lakra expanded their lead in the third quarter, successfully converting a penalty stroke in the 39th minute. Despite Joginder Singh’s 55th-minute goal for Haryana offering a brief respite, it was insufficient to turn the tide of the match.
Elsewhere, the battle for third place saw Uttar Pradesh overcome Manipur in a keenly contested match, winning 2-1. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, the Uttar Pradesh captain and an India international, struck first in the 6th minute, following a precise assist from Rajkumar Pal. Although Manipur equalized with a penalty corner conversion by Moirangthem Rabichandra Singh in the 43rd minute, Pal stepped up in the 54th minute to secure the victory for Uttar Pradesh with a decisive goal.
This victory for Odisha not only highlights their growing prominence in Indian hockey but also underscores individual talent, as seen in Shilanand Lakra’s standout performance, reinforcing their status as a formidable team in national hockey competitions.
