Outrage and Reassurance: Karnataka CM Siddharamaiah Strongly Denies Claims of BPL Card Cancellations
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has refuted claims that the State Government is canceling below poverty line (BPL) cards for eligible beneficiaries. Speaking in Bagalkot on November 17, 2024, he clarified that efforts are being made to remove ineligible individuals, including government employees and taxpayers, from the BPL list to ensure benefits reach deserving citizens. The Food Department is considering a proposal to have ineligible cardholders return their BPL cards, but no definitive action has been taken yet. Siddaramaiah emphasized that the aim is to prevent abuse of government benefits and protect the interests of the rightful beneficiaries.
Addressing allegations of a 40% commission in government contracts during the BJP’s tenure, Siddaramaiah noted the investigation initiated by a complaint from D. Kempanna of the State contractor’s association. Although the BJP claims exoneration by the Lokayukta, Siddaramaiah suggested that such conclusions might indicate witness shortcomings rather than factual innocence.
The Chief Minister also reiterated his accusation against the BJP, alleging attempts to entice 50 Congress MLAs with offers of ₹50 crore each to trigger defections, a plan he claims was unsuccessful.
