Chaos Erupts: Indefinite Curfew in Manipur Amidst Escalating Tensions
Manipur witnessed heightened unrest as demonstrators set vehicles ablaze and targeted the homes of ministers and legislators in Imphal, prompting authorities to enforce an indefinite curfew and internet shutdown in several regions. The turmoil followed the discovery of bodies suspected to be six Meitei individuals, including women and children, reportedly kidnapped by Kuki militants from Jiribam district. This incident fueled public outrage and accusations against local leaders for failing to curb the violence.
Protesters attacked multiple residences of political figures, including Chief Minister Biren Singh’s son-in-law and other BJP representatives. Attempts were also made to breach the Chief Minister’s private residence on the outskirts of Imphal, but security forces intervened. The unrest arose after ten individuals claimed to be Hmar community volunteers, were killed by security forces, sparking further tension.
As a preventive measure, curfews were imposed across Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts, while internet services were suspended in multiple areas to prevent the spread of hate messages through social media. The state government emphasized restoring order, urging citizens to remain peaceful and dismiss rumors.
The Meitei Heritage Society condemned the brutal killings, demanding stringent punishment for those responsible. Meanwhile, the central government has pledged to handle critical cases through the National Investigation Agency and has classified involved groups as unlawful organizations. The situation remains fragile, with security forces on high alert to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.
