After an extensive year-long merger process between Viacom18 and Disney Star India, Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, announces a significant new venture. Mukesh Ambani’s Star India won the highly contested bid to produce a web series chronicling the 90-year history of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a key institution overseeing India’s banking system. This development forms part of Reliance’s expanded media footprint, which now includes ownership of two OTT platforms and access to 120 channels, reaching a vast audience of 750 million viewers.

The web series, a five-episode production approximately 25 to 30 minutes in length each, will capture the pivotal role RBI has played since its establishment in 1935, highlighting its contributions to the country’s economic landscape as it approaches its 90th anniversary. Securing the production rights was a competitive endeavor, with rivals like Zee Entertainment Network and Discovery Communications India also vying for the project. Ultimately, Star India, buoyed by its collaboration with Viacom18, emerged victorious.

Nita Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s wife, takes the helm of the newly merged media company. As Chairperson, she brings her leadership experience from the Reliance Foundation and her ownership of the IPL team Mumbai Indians. Reliance holds a controlling 63.16% stake in the company, with Disney retaining 36.84%. The joint venture is poised to generate an impressive annual revenue of Rs 26,000 crore, strengthened by Reliance’s Rs 11,500 crore investment.

This initiative positions Nita Ambani and her leadership team to tackle formidable challenges in the competitive OTT landscape, rivaling industry giants like Sony, Netflix, and Amazon. The company will be guided by three CEOs, with Kevin Vaz overseeing entertainment, Kiran Mani managing the digital division, and Sanjog Gupta directing the sports division. Uday Shankar will serve as vice-chairman, supporting this ambitious media venture.
