Awake Brain Surgery Transforms 20 Years of Agony into a Symphony: A Heartfelt Miracle for U.S. Guitarist
In a remarkable medical feat at Bengaluru’s Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, 65-year-old Los Angeles guitarist Joseph D’Souza underwent an innovative awake brain surgery to treat his Guitarist’s Dystonia, a rare neurological condition causing involuntary hand muscle contractions. D’Souza, whose musical journey began at age six, encountered this ailment in 2004, severely impacting his career. During the seven-hour surgery on October 22, D’Souza played his guitar while fully conscious, assisting doctors in accurately identifying the brain area requiring correction.
The intricate procedure was led by Sharan Srinivasan, a Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeon, and Sanjiv C.C., a Senior Neurologist, utilizing MRI-guided stereotactic neurosurgery. This involved performing a Vo Thalamotomy with Radio Frequency to target and ablate the malfunctioning brain circuit. Successfully discharged on October 26, D’Souza anticipates resuming his musical career after a three-month neuro-rehabilitation period.
Inspired by similar successful surgeries at the same hospital, D’Souza overcame his skepticism and followed the path set by fellow guitarists Abhishek and Taskin Ali, who underwent similar procedures in 2017 and 2018. This remarkable case underscores the potential of advanced medical interventions to restore lives interrupted by debilitating conditions.
