Urgent: Authorities Pressed to Deliver Life-Saving Report on Crucial Road Safety Measures
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has mandated the submission of a detailed report concerning a public interest litigation (PIL) addressing inadequate safety measures on the road from Fatima College to Samayanallur in Madurai. The Division Bench, comprising Justices M.S. Ramesh and A.D. Maria Clete, has requested authorities to include data on accidents reported along this stretch from 2018 to 2024. This directive came during the hearing of a PIL filed in 2023 by N. Senthil Kumar of Paravai. The petitioner urged the court to compel authorities to implement safety improvements, such as installing medians, reflective signboards, and ensuring clear zebra crossings and standardized speed breakers. Additionally, concerns were raised about the need for proper lighting and the removal of posters defacing signage. The court has postponed further proceedings to November 19. This development highlights the ongoing concern for road safety in the region, stressing the importance of implementing effective measures.
