Tragic Discovery: Bodies of Abducted Victims Found in Jiri River Stir Outrage and Demand Justice
In Imphal, on November 16, the bodies of a woman and two children—believed to be among the six people abducted from Jiribam’s Borobekra sub-division—were discovered floating in the Jiri River near Jirimukh on Friday evening, as confirmed by Assam Police. The bodies have been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations. While awaiting formal identification by family members, security officials mentioned that descriptions of the deceased align with those of the missing. The recovery followed a coordinated effort by Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Assam Police after reports suggested their presence in the river.
The six missing individuals, all hailing from the Meitei community, were allegedly kidnapped by militants during a strategic attack on November 11. This attack targeted Meitei homes in Jakuradhor and included the destruction of houses, assaults on relief camps, and security posts. The victims—a grandmother, her two daughters, and three grandchildren—had resided in a relief camp at Borobekra police station since June.
A gunfight ensued between militants and CRPF personnel, resulting in the deaths of 10 militants and the injury of one CRPF officer. The following day, the bodies of two elderly Meitei men from the relief camp were found nearby.
The abductions and subsequent killings have sparked widespread outrage, with state-wide demands for the safe return of the captives. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) criticized the authorities for their approach to the crisis. On November 15, COCOMI accused the Centre of a “submissive approach” in locating the abductees and alleged the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) attempted negotiations with militants. Reports suggest the MHA proposed an exchange: the bodies of the 10 militants for the release of the abducted women and children.
