Heartbreaking Discovery: Bodies of Two Children and Woman Found in Jiribam After Devastating Manipur Kidnapping
Tensions have heightened in Manipur following the discovery of the bodies of two children and a woman near the Manipur-Assam border on Friday evening. These bodies were found just days after six family members were reportedly kidnapped by militants in Manipur’s Jiribam district. Although the bodies were located approximately 15 kilometers from the kidnapping site near a river on the inter-state border, it remains unclear if they belong to the kidnapped individuals. Officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the corpses have been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam for verification. If identification proves challenging, DNA tests may be conducted, according to an ABP News report.
In response to these events, hundreds of people held a candlelight vigil in Mizoram’s Aizawl to protest the deaths of 11 members of the Hmar-Mizo community in Jiribam. Demonstrators expressed outrage over the killing of a Hmar tribal woman, a mother of three, in Zairwan village on November 7, and nine other community members allegedly killed by security forces on November 11 at Jakuradhor in Jiribam. Protestors criticized both the Manipur government and the central government for their inability to curtail ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
In a related development, the Ministry of Home Affairs reinstated the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in six police stations across five districts, including the violence-stricken Jiribam. Notably, Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam criticized the central government for overriding state authority in imposing AFSPA, stating, “This latest imposition makes history.” He emphasized that previously, such impositions were always enacted by the state government.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, with political and community leaders seeking solutions to quell the escalating violence and restore peace and stability in the region.
