Empowered Landowners Urged to Embrace Fair Compensation Rates, Declares TR | MorungExpress

Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang recently addressed the media at his residence following a comprehensive inspection of National Highway (NH) projects in Nagaland. After the four-day assessment, Zeliang urged landowners to comply with compensation rates set by the State Land Acquisition Authority to prevent delays in road projects. Highlighting compensation disputes as a frequent cause of stalled projects, Zeliang lamented the lack of sustainable roads in the state, noting that completed roads often suffer due to funding shortages for maintenance. He emphasized that National Highways, fully funded by the Central government with provisions for maintenance, are vital for the state’s infrastructure improvement.

During the tour from November 11, covering areas such as Phek, Kiphire, and Mokokchung, Zeliang and his team scrutinized ongoing projects and met with local administrations. Unsatisfied with the progress on certain projects, he instructed the chief engineer to expedite operations within ten days or face contract termination for underperforming firms. Zeliang pointed to significant advancements on NH 202, anticipating project approval once necessary documentation is submitted. However, he expressed concern over illegal structures built along highways aimed at claiming compensation, potentially delaying projects.

Zeliang stressed the importance of consulting with local authorities to address these issues, and clarified that only buildings over a decade old would be eligible for compensation. The state government, eyeing future reforms, is also considering amendments to the Nagaland Land Compensation Act. Highlighting the broader regional concerns, Zeliang noted that 40 projects under the North East Council (NEC) and the Department of North Eastern Region (DoNER) are stalled due to unresolved land compensation issues. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also expressed dissatisfaction, suggesting foreclosure of stagnant projects if compensation provisions remain unaddressed.
