Unraveling the NEHU Imbroglio: Centre’s Bold Move to Investigate Sparks Hope and Resolution
In response to pressing concerns from students and recent media scrutiny, the Ministry of Education announced on Thursday the formation of a committee to investigate alleged administrative issues at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. The investigation follows complaints regarding declining rankings and alleged inefficiencies within the university’s administration. Notably, the university’s position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework has reportedly fallen due to perceived administrative negligence. Additional concerns include allegedly irregular appointments, including those of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, and neglect of maintenance and infrastructure, which are believed to impact the academic environment adversely.
A two-member committee has been set up, led by Prof. DP Singh, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, and Prof. Dilip Chandra Nath, ex-Vice Chancellor of Assam University. The panel is tasked with thoroughly examining these issues and delivering a report with recommendations within 15 days. The university has been advised to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Meanwhile, Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh, Head of the Department of Education at NEHU, has declined the role of Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Shillong campus. Prof. Sungoh, addressing protesting students and faculty, stated that her acceptance would hinge on the approval of stakeholders involved in the ongoing agitation. She criticized the appointment’s notification, issued by an Assistant Registrar in-charge, as lacking authority. Emphasizing her dedication to student welfare and institutional success, Prof. Sungoh rejected any possible manipulation by political or personal interests. Supporting the student cause, she reiterated her commitment to their well-being and shared aspirations.
Prof. Sungoh conveyed optimism about NEHU’s potential to regain its prestige, while the NEHU Teachers’ Association had previously advised her against accepting the appointment.
