Large Seizure of Smuggled Areca Nuts Worth Rs 74.52 Crore in Manipur by Assam Rifles
On November 15, 2024, the Assam Rifles in Manipur conducted a significant operation resulting in the interception of 53 trucks carrying 10,855 bags of smuggled areca nuts, valued at approximately Rs 74.52 crore in the international markets. This major bust unfolded across four operations in the Tengnoupal district, near the southern border with Myanmar, marking the largest seizure of the year.
Under the direction of the Headquarters Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), the first operation took place in Narum, where 3,400 bags worth Rs 23 crore were confiscated. In Sita Village, forces seized 255 bags weighing around 20,400 kg and valued at Rs 1.76 crore. Another raid in RRC Village led to the recovery of 400 bags totaling 32,000 kg and valued at Rs 2.76 crore. The most substantial haul was in LamlongKhunou, capturing 6,800 bags weighing 5,44,000 kg with an estimated value of Rs 47 crore.
In total, 53 truck drivers were detained amid this illicit business, highlighting the scale and organization behind the smuggling operation. All confiscated goods have been handed over to the Forest Department in Imphal for further legal action. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by local authorities to combat smuggling activities in the region, reflecting the critical role of the Assam Rifles in maintaining security and legal compliance in Manipur.
