Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, has suspended Inspector Bhargav Borbora, the Officer-in-Charge of Panbazar Police Station, following the circulation of a video showing a police officer assaulting a delivery agent. The footage, captured by a bystander, shows the officer aggressively confronting the delivery agent near the Jail Road traffic point in Fancy Bazar around 6:30 PM. The confrontation reportedly began when the agent allegedly ran a red light, prompting a police officer to pursue and violently apprehend him by the roadside.
The video depicts the officer gripping the delivery agent’s neck and shouting threats such as “Where do you think you are going?” and “I will kill you,” while ignoring onlookers’ attempts to intervene. An eyewitness who recorded the incident claimed the officer threatened them and demanded they cease filming.
In response to the incident, DGP Singh declared Inspector Borbora’s behavior unacceptable, resulting in his immediate suspension. Singh has directed the Commissioner of Police in Guwahati to appoint a new officer to the position. Additionally, a departmental inquiry has been launched to investigate the matter further.
A police official later attempted to justify the officer’s actions, alleging that the delivery agent had ignored directives to stop and was trying to enter a restricted “No Entry” zone. Despite these claims, public and official responses have expressed clear disapproval of the officer’s violent conduct.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding police conduct and the use of force, drawing attention to the need for accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. The suspension and inquiry aim to address these issues and prevent future occurrences of excessive force by police officers.
