Urgent Action Demanded: Resolve NEHU Crisis by Nov 20 – High Court Commands Centre
In recent developments concerning the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, the High Court of Meghalaya has decided to extend time for the Centre to address the ongoing issues plaguing the institution. On November 13, the court stated that it might consider taking suo motu cognisance of the situation if the problems persist by the next hearing on November 20. The decision came after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by Phuyosa Yobin, a high court advocate, urging the court to intervene and restore normalcy at NEHU.
The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee, acknowledged that the state government has forwarded recommendations to the Centre, which is currently deliberating on measures to solve NEHU’s challenges. The court highlighted that, given the university’s administration falls under central government jurisdiction, it is inclined to grant additional time for a resolution.
However, the Bench made it clear that if no significant progress is made by November 20, it may initiate suo motu proceedings to address the university’s issues. The court emphasized its continued close monitoring of the situation, directing the petitioner to disseminate the court’s order to all relevant parties such as the central and state governments, the Vice Chancellor, faculty, staff, and student unions at NEHU.
This move places the onus on the Centre to act swiftly to ensure NEHU’s smooth operation and resolve its persistent challenges. The court’s intervention underscores the urgency and importance of maintaining academic normalcy and stability at one of the region’s leading educational institutions. As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the Centre’s response and potential future court actions.
