Breaking: Centre’s Bold Decision in Meghalaya – HNLC Banned for 5 Years, Ushering Hope and Safety!
On November 14, 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the proscription of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), an insurgent group operating in Meghalaya, for a period of five years. The central government’s decision follows the HNLC’s continuous engagement in activities that threaten India’s sovereignty and integrity. The group has been involved in a campaign for the secession of territories in Meghalaya primarily populated by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes.
The MHA’s notification highlighted the HNLC’s pattern of intimidating civilians to extort funds on behalf of the organization, as well as its connections with other extremist groups in the Northeast. These associations facilitate the group’s operations, which include extortion and threatening behavior. From November 2019 to June 2024, the HNLC was responsible for 48 criminal acts, including explosions and the planting of explosives throughout the Meghalaya region.
Given these activities, the Union government deemed it necessary to classify HNLC as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, formally banning it for five years. This move aims to curb the group’s destabilizing influence and secure the region’s peace and stability.
