India boasts the world’s tallest railway bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge, which towers 1,178 feet (359 meters) above the Chenab river in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir. Surpassing the Eiffel Tower by around 35 meters, this engineering marvel is integral to the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Spanning over 1.3 kilometers, the bridge connects Baramulla to Jammu through the Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund route, facilitating a travel time of six-and-a-half hours.
Recently, a comprehensive mock drill was conducted atop the bridge by various security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group, Central Reserve Police Force, and others. As part of the drill, the forces aimed to gauge their preparedness against potential threats. The exercise emphasized safeguarding this critical infrastructure, which serves as a crucial link in Kashmir’s railway network.
Constructed to endure challenges, the Chenab Rail Bridge can withstand blasts of up to 40 kg of TNT, earthquakes with a magnitude of 8, and winds reaching 260 km/h. Its construction commenced in 2002 but faced a temporary halt in 2008-09 due to safety concerns over high-velocity winds. The project reached completion in 2024.
In a landmark event, Indian Railways successfully conducted a trial run of an eight-coach MEMU train on the bridge on June 20, opening the path for future rail services between Reasi and Baramulla. The USBRL project’s 48.1-km Banihal-Sangaldan section was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 20, 2024. Earlier phases included inaugurations of sections like the 118-km Qazigund-Baramulla line in 2009, the Banihal-Qazigund section in 2013, and the Udhampur-Katra link in 2014.
