Delhi Cabinet Triumphantly Approves Proposal for Empowering Bus Marshals’ Return
The Delhi Cabinet has approved a proposal to reinstate 10,000 bus marshals, pending approval from Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena. At a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Atishi, it was recommended that the bus marshals be reinstated immediately. This decision follows the government’s approval to deploy 10,000 civil defence volunteers from Monday to enforce pollution control measures for four months. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority, led by the L-G, had previously issued a reinstatement order mandating their deployment.
The reinstatement of the bus marshals comes after a year of political contention between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP. BJP president Virendra Sachdeva attributed the government’s decision to party pressure. The volunteers were initially deployed to ensure women’s safety on public buses but became jobless following an October 27 circular from Mr. Saxena, which criticized an “improper recruitment process.” Since then, multiple demonstrations have taken place. Both parties came together on September 26 to support a resolution in the Assembly to restore the volunteers’ roles.
