Outrage in Guwahati: Artist and Activist Detained Amid Passionate Protest Against Bharalumukh Tree Felling

Guwahati: In a protest against the Assam government’s decision to cut down trees for a bridge construction project in Bharalumukh, Guwahati police detained three individuals: graffiti artist Marshal Baruah, student activist Angkuman Bordoloi, and Kamal Kumar. The trio reportedly altered a previous slogan, “Please Himanta Save Nature,” to a more assertive “Kick Himanta Save Nature,” expressing their frustration over the ongoing felling of trees.

Since Saturday night, protests have intensified, with local residents, students, and activists voicing their concerns over environmental degradation. Demonstrators formed a human chain of about 100 people, including senior citizens, while holding placards and chanting for sustainable development and environmental protection. A public meeting was also organized to stress the importance of community input before proceeding with such infrastructural projects.

The opposition to tree felling in Bharalumukh mirrors a similar uproar last month at Dighalipukhuri, which resulted in a High Court intervention. The state’s Public Works Department has marked over 70 trees for removal in the current flyover project, prompting protesters to demand a public hearing and community consent before any further action.

Access to the Bharalumukh police station, where the detainees are being interrogated, has been limited to civilians and media, highlighting the tense atmosphere surrounding this environmental conflict. As the debate over development versus nature continues, the community remains steadfast in their demand for a balanced approach that honors both progress and preservation.
