The Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh (AKRS) Sikkim is preparing for the State-level Sakewa Festival 2024, set to be held on November 20 in Tathang village, near the scenic Khechuperi Lake in Gyalshing district. A final preparatory meeting took place to ensure smooth arrangements for the festival, chaired by Urban Development minister Bhojraj Rai. Key attendees included zilla adhakshya D.S. Limboo, Sikkim State Food Commission chairman Dr. S.K. Rai, and AKRS executive members, among others.
The Sakewa festival, a significant cultural event for the Rai community, is coordinated by the AKRS with support from the state government and local stakeholders. A state-level committee, led by Bhojraj Rai as chief patron and S.K. Samphang as the celebration committee president, was established to oversee preparations. Patrons of the festival also comprise notable figures such as Kala Rai, Jacob Khaling, Bina Rai, and S.S. Bokhim.
Discussions during the preparatory meeting focused on logistics like parking, accommodations, and organizing the cultural programs. The venue will provide a stunning backdrop, highlighted by various traditional Rai performances, including Silli and Sakela dances, along with demonstrations of ethnic attire, music, and cuisine, showcasing the unique cultural identity of the Kirat Rai people.
Chief Minister P.S. Golay is expected to grace the event as the chief guest. In his address, Minister Bhojraj Rai urged line departments to provide full support, encouraging the AKRS members to work collaboratively and contribute selflessly to ensure the festival’s success. He emphasized the importance of unity, urging the community to transcend any political differences and collectively celebrate the event.
The festival will feature a vibrant array of cultural and traditional programs, including Rai cultural performances and exhibitions of ethnic costumes and food. A thorough inspection of the festival venue was conducted by the dignitaries following the meeting.
