Salman Rushdie’s controversial novel, “The Satanic Verses,” originally banned in India in 1988, can now be imported following a recent Delhi High Court ruling. For 36 years, the book’s import was prohibited due to a notification issued under the Customs Act, stemming from the global backlash it faced from some Muslim communities who deemed certain passages blasphemous. The book also provoked a fatwa for Rushdie’s death, announced by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, which forced the author into hiding for years.

However, the Delhi High Court, led by Justice Rekha Palli, ruled that since authorities could not produce the original notification document from 1988, it must be presumed non-existent. This decision effectively lifts the ban on importing the novel, although its availability in bookstores will depend on publishers’ decisions. Uddyam Mukherjee, the lawyer of petitioner Sandipan Khan, confirmed that there is now no legal prohibition on importing the book. Penguin Random House India, Rushdie’s publisher in India, regards the ruling as a significant development but is still considering next steps.

There has been no official comment from the Indian government, and Rushdie has not publicly responded to this development. The ruling presents a potential path for “The Satanic Verses” to become widely available in India again, though challenges could arise if individuals or groups appeal against the decision.
