Urgent Warning: NSCN (IM) Vows to Reignite Armed Struggle Over Unmet Flag and Constitution Demands
Guwahati, Nov 9: The Naga insurgent group NSCN-Isak Muivah (IM) has issued a stark warning to the Indian government, threatening to end their 27-year-old ceasefire and resume armed conflict if their demands for a separate national flag and constitution are not met. According to a national newswire, the NSCN (IM) has also called for a third-party mediator in negotiations with the Indian government. This ultimatum comes after recent talks in New Delhi on October 7 and 8 failed to reach a resolution.
The group stated they would resort to armed resistance to safeguard Nagalim’s unique history and sovereignty if their mediation demand is dismissed, emphasizing that India would bear responsibility for any ensuing escalation. Thuingaleng Muivah, NSCN (IM)’s general secretary and chief negotiator, underscored that the organization initially sought conflict resolution through peaceful discussions, respecting the commitments made by former Indian Prime Ministers.
Since a violent insurgency in Nagaland post-1947 independence, the NSCN (IM) entered a ceasefire in 1997, initiating extensive peace talks that have witnessed over 600 rounds. These led to the 2015 Framework Agreement. Muivah accuses the government of reneging on this agreement by not acknowledging the Naga national flag and constitution. He asserts that any political settlement must honor Naga sovereignty as detailed in the Framework Agreement.
The ongoing peace talks are reportedly stalled as the Indian government continues to reject the NSCN (IM)’s demand for a separate flag and constitution. Meanwhile, the government is engaging with splinter factions, such as NSCN-NK, NSCN-R, NSCN K-Khango, and NSCN-K-Niki, which have agreed to ceasefires. The deadlock raises concerns about the future stability in the region.
