Urgent Alert: NSCN-IM’s Explosive Threat of Armed Conflict in Nagaland Over Broken 2015 Agreement
In a stirring declaration from Kohima on November 8, NSCN-IM, a Naga insurgent group, has signaled potential escalation to “violent armed conflict” and called for third-party mediation to resolve the longstanding Naga political issue. The group has held a ceasefire with the Indian government since 1997. However, they now accuse the Centre of reneging on the Framework Agreement of August 3, 2015.
NSCN-IM General Secretary Thuingaleng Muivah has criticized the Indian government for allegedly refusing to honor key aspects of the agreement, specifically the recognition of the “Naga national flag and constitution.” Muivah insists that these elements are essential and non-negotiable for any future political settlement.
The 2015 Framework Agreement, which represented a breakthrough by recognizing the Naga issue as one between two sovereign entities, also underscored Nagalim’s national flag and constitution. NSCN-IM views the Centre’s refusal to formalize these aspects as a betrayal, threatening to undermine the peace process initiated in 1997, during which over 600 rounds of talks have occurred.
Muivah warned that the Centre’s failure to adhere to the Framework Agreement terms could revert the situation back to armed resistance. Nevertheless, he expressed hope for a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the necessity for the Naga flag and constitution to be part of any agreement. He advocated for external mediation to break the impasse, suggesting that such intervention might be necessary to prevent renewed conflict.
In a stark warning, Muivah reiterated the group’s readiness to defend Nagalim’s sovereignty through armed resistance if required, while urging the Indian government to acknowledge and integrate their demands to preserve the fragile peace in the region.
