Urgent Call to Action: Transform Assam’s 271 Wetlands into a Powerful Flood Control Strategy
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has instructed the Assam government to develop a detailed feasibility report regarding the use of 271 wetlands for flood water diversion by December. This project, aimed at revitalizing wetlands to manage floodwaters effectively, could cost up to Rs 500 crore. The exact number of wetlands to be incorporated will be determined after a thorough survey. During his visit to Assam, Mohan engaged in several discussions on issues like law and order, inter-state border management, flood control, and the status of tribal councils. In the meetings, Mohan reviewed the progress on wetland rejuvenation and the strategic use of these areas to handle floodwaters in Assam. Identified by the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), these wetlands are essential for diverting floodwaters from the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries. The state’s Water Resources Department (WRD) emphasized the necessity of restoring these wetlands for effective water diversion. Initially, the WRD identified nine wetlands across seven districts with an estimated project cost of Rs 380.60 crore, but has requested additional funds from the central government. Mohan requested a comprehensive survey of all earmarked wetlands and a concept paper evaluating their feasibility by December 2024. This ambitious project seeks a sustainable solution to Assam’s flooding issues, by strategically integrating and utilizing its wetlands for water storage and management.
