Biden Urgently Pushes Crucial Study, Endangering Trump’s Ambitious LNG Dreams
The Biden administration is urgently working to complete a study that could challenge President-Elect Donald Trump’s plan to rapidly approve new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminals. This study, which began in January, analyzes the climate, economic, and national security impacts of increasing U.S. LNG exports. Initiated alongside a moratorium on new LNG export licenses imposed by Biden, the study could complicate Trump’s promise to lift this halt on his first day in office. If it concludes that additional exports are detrimental, Trump’s approvals might face legal hurdles, according to ClearView Energy Partners’ Kevin Book.
The Energy Department aims to finalize the study before Trump assumes office on January 20, pending a 60-day public comment period. Despite potential challenges by the study’s findings, Trump’s administration plans to expand U.S. fossil fuel production. His victory is anticipated to facilitate the construction of LNG export terminals, solidifying the U.S.’s position as a leading global LNG supplier. Trump’s stance contrasts with Biden’s moratorium, which threatened development projects worth billions of dollars by companies like Venture Global LNG Inc. and Commonwealth LNG.
Developers remain hopeful, with Energy Transfer co-CEO Mackie McCrea expressing optimism post-election. Trump can further promote American LNG by encouraging allied nations to purchase the fuel. While negative study outcomes could slow projects, the Trump administration could overlook these findings, although legal uncertainties would persist. Companies like Cheniere Energy Inc. and NextDecade Corp. saw stock increases following Trump’s electoral win, anticipating favorable conditions for obtaining necessary permits.
