Shocking Clash: BJP MLAs and Marshals Engage in Heated Altercation at J&K Assembly Amidst Rising Tensions
On November 7, a session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in Srinagar was adjourned due to a clash between BJP MLAs and marshals. The tension arose as opposition members protested a resolution seeking to restore the region’s special status under Articles 370 and 35A, which had been removed in 2019. The BJP labeled the resolution as “illegal” and demanded its withdrawal, but Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather stated that only the House could annul its decisions.
The session descended into chaos when Awami Ittehad Party leader Sheikh Khursheed disrupted proceedings with a banner advocating for the reinstatement of these Articles. This provoked a scuffle between BJP MLAs and opposition members, leading the Speaker to initially adjourn the Assembly for 15 minutes. Upon resumption, further protests led to the forceful eviction of three BJP MLAs by marshals, amidst allegations from BJP MLA R S Pathania that the ruling National Conference (NC) had compromised the Assembly’s integrity.
Amidst the disorder, a new resolution demanding the immediate restoration of Articles 370 and 35A was submitted by members from various parties, including the PDP and People’s Conference. This resolution condemned the previous unconstitutional actions that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and statehood.
Minister Satish Sharma accused the BJP of divisive tactics, highlighting their disrespect towards India’s Constitution by standing on it during the protest. The Speaker, emphasizing the limits of his authority, refrained from retracting the contested resolution passed on Wednesday, citing parliamentary procedure. Observers noted the growing divide between parties advocating for Jammu and Kashmir’s special status restoration and those asserting its permanence in history as a thing of the past.
