Unlocking Nagaland’s Economic Future: The Critical Role of Infrastructure Investments – A Powerful Journey from BAN to 16th FC | MorungExpress
The Business Association of Nagas (BAN) has presented a case to the 16th Finance Commission, urging comprehensive investments to address Nagaland’s dire infrastructure needs and spur economic development. A recent road safety audit has restricted heavy vehicles on National Highway-29 near Dimapur, highlighting the state’s poor road conditions, particularly on the Dimapur-Kohima route. This issue represents a significant barrier to equitable growth in both urban and rural areas.
BAN’s representation underscores various infrastructure deficits, including outdated facilities at Dimapur Airport and the neglected Tuli Railway Station, which hinder Nagaland’s connectivity and economic potential. The association advocates upgrading the Dimapur Airport to international standards to boost trade and tourism and calls for improvements to the Tuli Railway station to optimize resource utilization. GAN has also pointed out the importance of augmenting power capacity, as Nagaland’s peak demand outstrips current supply, urging investment in renewable energy projects.
Ganeshnagar SEZ and border trade centers such as Longwa and Avangkhu lack essential infrastructure, stunting potential economic growth. BAN emphasizes the need for road connectivity and suggests dialogue between India and Myanmar to enhance cross-border trade. The establishment of an exhibition center in Dimapur and a dry port is viewed as vital for regional trade enhancement.
Security is another priority, with BAN proposing a robust surveillance system to protect business interests. To leverage Nagaland’s rich natural resources, BAN suggests improving road access to resource-abundant areas. In addressing developmental challenges, BAN proposes sector-specific grants for infrastructure, special financial aid for unique political challenges, and investment in skill development.
These proposals, if adopted, could unlock Nagaland’s economic potential, bridging current gaps and positioning the state for substantial growth and development.
