Heart-Wrenching Justice: Brothers Receive 20-Year Sentence for the Heinous Crime of Raping a Minor
In a significant legal development in Tripura, the Dharmanagar Special Court handed down 20-year prison sentences to two brothers, Prashanta Debnath and Pappu Debnath, for the rape of a minor. The crime took place in 2022 when the victim, a student from Anandabazar in Tripura’s North District, was lured by Prashanta into a house while fetching water. There, she was raped by him, with Pappu witnessing the act. Subsequently, Pappu used blackmail to repeatedly assault the victim.
The case was officially recorded at the Dharmanagar police station on February 12, 2022, and was swiftly investigated by Sub-inspector Usharani Debnath of the Dharmanagar Woman Police Station, who concluded her report within two months. During the trial, testimony from 23 neighbors provided crucial evidence against the culprits. The court invoked Section 376(2)(N) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to sentence Prashanta to ten years imprisonment with an additional six months for non-payment of a Rs 10,000 fine. Pappu was sentenced to one year with a Rs 1,000 fine and an added month of imprisonment under Section 506 of the IPC.
Further, under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, a combined sentence of 20 years was imposed on both brothers, together with an additional eight months should they fail to pay the fines. The judgment underscores the judicial system’s commitment to addressing heinous crimes against minors and sending out a strong message against sexual violence.
