India Steps Closer to Hosting 2036 Olympics and Paralympics
New Delhi, Nov 5: India has officially declared its ambition to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, marking a significant advancement in its journey towards becoming a global sports leader. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has submitted a Letter of Intent to the Future Host Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on October 1, indicating India’s interest, sources revealed to IANS.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a vocal advocate for hosting the Games in India, emphasizing the potential benefits such a monumental event could bring, including economic growth, social progress, and youth empowerment. During an Independence Day meeting with athletes who participated in the Paris Olympics, PM Modi solicited their insights to aid in the meticulous preparation required for hosting the Games.
PM Modi has continuously voiced India’s commitment to this endeavor, declaring in last year’s 141st IOC Session in Mumbai that every possible effort will be made to see the dream of hosting the Olympics on Indian soil realized. The IOC President, Thomas Bach, has also acknowledged India’s strong case for hosting the Games.
India is among 10 countries that have shown interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, with India proposing Ahmedabad as the host city. The list of interested countries includes Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, Poland, Egypt, and South Korea. The IOC has begun discussions with these nations, with the host selection process managed by the Future Host Commission.
This initial expression of interest is a crucial step in a competitive process, reflecting India’s dedication to bringing the world’s largest sporting event to its shores. Such a bid underscores the aspirations of 140 crore Indians to fulfill their age-old dream of hosting the Olympics.
