Unthinkable Defeat: New Zealand Crushes India with Historic 3-0 Test Series Victory

New Zealand secured a historic 3-0 series whitewash, defeating India by 25 runs in the third Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 3, 2024. This marks India’s first-ever series whitewash in a series of more than three matches since their cricket journey began in 1933. The last time India faced a home series defeat was in 2000 against South Africa.

The series commenced with New Zealand’s victory in Bengaluru by eight wickets, their first on Indian soil in 36 years, followed by a commanding 113-run win in Pune. Despite dismissing New Zealand for 174 on day four, India fell short of a 147-run target. Notably, Ajaz Patel’s exceptional bowling performance, securing 11 wickets in the match, led to India’s dramatic batting collapse. Rishabh Pant’s valiant 64-run effort was overshadowed as New Zealand’s bowlers, including Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips, dismantled India’s lineup.

In earlier play, contributions from Will Young (51), Glenn Phillips (26), and Devon Conway (22) set a competitive tone for New Zealand on a tricky pitch. Ravindra Jadeja’s impressive 5-55 was a highlight for India but ultimately insufficient. The result is being viewed critically, sparking widespread reflection on India’s performance at home.
