Joyous Bhai Dooj Celebration: Tripura Chief Minister Inspires Party Workers with Heartfelt Participation
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha joined women BJP party workers at his residence on Sunday to celebrate Bhai Dooj, marking his second year of observing the festival with them. While speaking to reporters, Saha remarked that celebrating Bhai Dooj with BJP members has added a new layer of meaning to his traditional celebrations at home.
Bhai Dooj, a festival that celebrates the sibling bond, is observed across India under various names. In Bengal, it is called Bhai Phonta; in Maharashtra, it is known as Bhai Tika; and in Karnataka and Telangana, it is celebrated as Yama Dwitiya. The festival has its roots in Hindu mythology, recounting the story of Goddess Yamuna who welcomed her brother Yamraj for a meal on Kartik Dwitiya.
During the festival, sisters perform rituals by marking their brothers’ foreheads with a tilak, offering prayers and fasting for their brothers’ prosperity and protection. In return, brothers present gifts and pledge to protect their sisters.
Unlike Raksha Bandhan—which involves sisters tying a protective thread on their brothers’ wrists—Bhai Dooj emphasizes the tilak ceremony and other traditional customs. Ancient Hindu texts document the celebration, highlighting stories involving deities like Krishna and Yamraj, which underscore the enduring bond between siblings.
By participating in this cultural festivity with party colleagues, Saha seeks to blend personal traditions with his professional commitments, demonstrating the importance of familial bonds even within political circles. His engagement signals a commitment to community values while reinforcing the social significance of such traditional celebrations.
