Urgent Alert: Mokokchung Residents of Nagaland Urged to Protect Democracy from Deceptive Voter Registration Scams
The Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer of Mokokchung, Thsuvisie Phoji, has issued a firm advisory urging residents to ensure integrity during the ongoing voter registration process. Emphasizing the importance of preventing electoral fraud, Phoji warned that any voter registration applications containing false information, such as fake images or fraudulent documents, would face stringent legal action under electoral law.
The advisory specifically pertains to applications submitted via Form 6, the standard for new voter registrations. According to Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, supplying false information on an electoral roll application is a serious offense, attracting penalties of up to one year of imprisonment, fines, or both. Phoji stressed that submitting inaccurate claims—whether through falsified documents or knowingly submitting untruthful information—is deemed a criminal act under Indian law.
Under these legal provisions, Mokokchung’s district office will implement measures to ensure the integrity of the voter registration process:
– Any Form 6 applications with falsified images, documents, or misleading information will be rejected outright.
– Individuals guilty of submitting fraudulent applications—or assisting others in doing so—will face legal prosecution, with potential penalties of up to one year of imprisonment or fines as per Section 31 of the Act.
– Offenders may also be restricted from future voter registration attempts, affecting their participation in upcoming elections.
Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) across the district have been directed to conduct thorough verifications of registration applications, with any suspected fraud cases immediately flagged for investigation.
The district administration has called on residents and political figures to ensure all voter applications are authentic and comply fully with election laws. Phoji underscored that any attempts to falsify voter registration details undermine the democratic process and will be met with zero tolerance.
