Shocking Assam Trading Scam: Accused Deceptively Withholds Crucial Details, Police Reveal
Guwahati, October 31 (IANS): Dipankar Burman, accused in a multi-crore online trading fraud, is under intense interrogation by Assam Police officials in Guwahati. Despite being questioned extensively, Burman has reportedly withheld crucial information and dodged important questions regarding the scam. Investigators highlighted discrepancies between Burman’s statements and those of his girlfriend, who is also in custody for her alleged involvement in the scandal.
Further complicating the case, authorities have detained a Chartered Accountant who worked for Burman. His account conflicts with Burman’s, particularly concerning the involvement of Hawala transactions in the scam. While the accountant acknowledged the use of such transactions, Burman has denied them. The scam reportedly defrauded thousands by promising high returns on investments through his company, DB Stock Limited.
Burman, elusive since August, was apprehended in Goa on Sunday, having evaded capture since the fraud surfaced. His arrest followed a manhunt initiated by Guwahati Police, who traced him through mobile and social media activities, with significant assistance from Goa Police. The operation culminated when the Assam Police traveled to Goa to detain him.
Police Commissioner Diganta Borah revealed that earlier efforts to apprehend Burman involved arresting his parents and two girlfriends, which eventually led to key breakthroughs. Upon his arrest, authorities seized cash and gold from Burman’s Goa residence, including over Rs 27 lakh and several gold ornaments.
The arrest marks a significant step in the investigation as police aim to unravel the full extent of the fraud, which implicates Burman in deceiving approximately 21,000 people in Assam through his trading scheme. The Director General of Police, G.P. Singh, affirmed the breakthrough on social media, acknowledging the relentless efforts of the police team in bringing Burman to justice and ending his run from the law.
