Exciting Reopening: Kundannoor Bridge Set to Welcome Travelers Again This Monday!
The Kundannoor bridge, notorious for its potholes and uneven surface due to insufficient maintenance, is set to reopen on November 4 after being closed since October 15 for resurfacing. This 2-km bridge, connecting Kundannoor with Willingdon Island and West Kochi, was initially scheduled to reopen on November 15. Resurfacing was expedited using stone mastic asphalt (SMA) technology, similar to what was applied to the nearby Alexander Parambithara bridge, which reopened last week. This SMA resurfacing comes with a five-year defect liability period, ensuring continuous repair and maintenance by the contractor. The accelerated bridge works followed public protests against the month-long closure. Additionally, traffic restrictions on the parallel Chilavannur bridge, under reconstruction, exacerbated the situation. Although the resurfacing of the Kundannoor bridge is complete, and approach roads will soon follow, tensions flared when locals allegedly disrupted work on another bridge project by Kochi Metro Rail Limited over design rumor-related concerns. The contractor has warned of potential work halts if such disruptions continue.
