Pandit M. Venkatesh Kumar’s Inspiring Triumph: Prestigious Alva’s Virasat Award Honor
The Alva’s Education Foundation in Moodbidri has announced that the prestigious Alva’s Virasat Award for 2024 will be bestowed upon Hindustani vocalist Pandit M. Venkatesh Kumar. This accolade comes with a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, along with a memento and a citation. The six-day Virasat event is set to commence on December 10th. Originating from Lakshmipura in Ballari, Pandit Kumar’s early musical journey was influenced by his father, Hulegappa, a folk singer and shadow puppeteer. He honed his craft in the Gwalior and Kirana gharana styles under the mentorship of Guru Puttaraj Gawai and is also well-versed in Carnatic music. Renowned for his devotional Kannada Vachanas and Dasarapadas, Pandit Kumar has received numerous honors such as the Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Bhimsen Joshi Award, among others. With a rich, resonant voice, his performances are a unique blend of traditional and devotional music, making him a revered figure both in India and internationally, as stated by the Foundation’s Chairman, M. Mohan Alva.
