SKM’s Remarkable Triumph: Secures Two Assembly Seats Uncontested in Sikkim By-Polls
Gangtok, Oct 30: In a significant development for Sikkim’s political landscape, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has secured decisive victories in the Soreng-Chakhung and Namchi-Singhithang assembly seats without contest. This outcome followed the withdrawal of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidates and the disqualification of Citizen Action Party-Sikkim (CAP-S) nominees.
Notably, national parties like the BJP and Congress did not field candidates, nor were there any independent entries in these elections. In Soreng-Chakhung, Aditya Tamang, the son of Chief Minister and SKM leader Prem Singh Tamang, emerged victorious. His unchallenged win came after SDF’s Prem Bahadur Bhandari withdrew and CAP-S’s Pobin Hang Subba faced nomination rejection during scrutiny. This seat opened up when Chief Minister Tamang, who had initially won both the Soreng-Chakhung and Rhenock seats in April 2024, chose to retain Rhenock.
In Namchi-Singhithang, SKM’s Satish Chandra Rai claimed victory following the exit of SDF’s Danial Rai and disqualification of CAP-S’s Mahesh Rai and SDF’s Yojna Rai. The vacancy arose after Chief Minister’s wife, Krishna Kumari Rai, resigned from her position.
These uncontested wins for SKM further consolidate its dominance in Sikkim’s political arena, where it already secured 31 of the 32 seats in the April assembly elections. The lone SDF MLA from that election has since switched allegiance to SKM, reinforcing the party’s stronghold in the region. These developments underscore SKM’s growing influence and the challenges faced by opposition parties in mounting an effective challenge in Sikkim’s political sphere.
