Empowering Change: Meghalaya’s Bold Move to Relocate 200 Hawkers from Khyndailad by November’s End

Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has announced plans to relocate approximately 200 registered hawkers and street vendors from Shillong’s Khyndailad by the end of November. This initiative is part of the state government’s broader aim to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly zone to attract more tourists and visitors to the city. Lyngdoh emphasized that unregistered hawkers will not be allowed to conduct business operations in the area, highlighting the government’s commitment to regulating street vendor activities.

This development follows a directive from the Meghalaya High Court, which has asked the state government for a report by January 6 on how street vendors are contributing to traffic congestion. The court’s involvement underscores the urgency of addressing the issues caused by unregulated street commerce, particularly their impact on traffic flow and public convenience.

Minister Lyngdoh mentioned that efforts to rehabilitate the hawkers began back in August, and the state has been in the process of identifying trades and individual vendors. He clarified that no more than two vendors in the same line of work would be permitted in a single location, a measure aimed at diversifying business activities and reducing overcrowding.

Additionally, the minister noted that safety protocols are being put in place for workers who rely on energy sources like fire, indicating the government’s concern for the welfare and security of the street vendor community. Previous attempts to complete the relocation by August 15 were delayed due to the time-consuming process of cataloging both the trades and the individual vendors.

This strategic move is a part of Meghalaya’s effort to enhance urban planning while addressing public safety and convenience, promoting a balanced approach between supporting small businesses and ensuring better city management.
