Revolutionizing School Education in Nagaland: Exciting Pedagogical and Curricular Transformations Under NEP
A science exhibition was held at the Government Middle School for Children with Special Needs in Lerie, Kohima, on October 29. The event emphasized the significance of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in transforming education with a foundational structure of 5+3+3+4, catering to children aged 3 to 18. This restructuring initiative aims to bridge the gap in early childhood education, especially for children between the ages of 3 to 6, who were previously excluded from the conventional 10+2 system.
Vizoneilie Pienyü, Coordinator for the Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC), L Khel, Kohima, highlighted the NEP’s focus on enhancing educational outcomes and well-being from an early age, underscoring the need to adapt to the changes. Currently, the pupil-teacher ratios in government schools under EBRC, L Khel, are notably favorable, showing 6:1 in primary schools, 8:1 in middle schools, and 10:1 in high schools—a stark contrast to the national average of 30:1 and the NEP 2020 goal of 25:1.
The science exhibition was an opportunity to showcase the creativity, curiosity, and potential of young students, with 17 innovative models displayed. It was attended by Government Middle School Aradura and Government Primary School Tsiepfutsiepfe, Kohima, among others. Through this event, the importance of science education was highlighted, pointing out how it fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to understand the surrounding world.
Pienyü encouraged students to remain inquisitive, explore, and pursue their interests in science, reminding them of its omnipresent role in daily life—from the air we breathe to the technology we use. Krovielhouoe Koza introduced the exhibition day, which served as a platform to nurture and celebrate the students’ budding talents and engagement with science. The event reflected a commitment to advancing education that embraces inclusivity and adaptability in the rapidly evolving learning landscape.
