Unyielding Support for UNRWA: UN Leaders Express Outrage Over Knesset Ban
The recent Knesset vote targeting the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has sparked significant concern from international officials. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of the potential “devastating consequences” of this decision, as UNRWA is essential for delivering aid to Gaza’s war-stricken population. UN human rights chief Volker Türk described the move as “deeply troubling,” emphasizing the dire impact on those reliant on the agency.
Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, highlighted the critical role UNRWA plays in supplying food, healthcare, and education for most of Gaza’s residents. He noted that civilians already bear the brunt of the conflict and said this decision would exacerbate their suffering. Additionally, concerns about Israel’s compliance with international law have been reiterated, especially regarding its obligations under human rights treaties.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, deemed the legislation “intolerable,” pointing out the threat to health services upon which many depend. WHO’s Tarik Jasarevic noted that UNRWA staff conducted over six million medical consultations last year, underscoring the agency’s unmatched capacity to deliver healthcare.
The closure of diplomatic channels is also worrisome, with Jens Laerke of the UN aid coordination office stressing the need to prevent the implementation of the Knesset’s decision. Catherine Russell from UNICEF underscored the jeopardy facing Palestinian children, explaining that UNRWA’s absence could lead to the humanitarian system’s collapse in Gaza.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder added that without UNRWA, distributing essential supplies like vaccines, clothing, and hygiene kits would be nearly impossible, risking children’s lives. As appeals mount for diplomatic interventions, the international community awaits the potential implications of these legislative measures.
