The initiative involves constructing a bamboo barrier to safeguard land and homes in Rongapara’s Chiloni Gaon Panchayat, reflecting the community’s proactive spirit amid governmental inaction.
Despite the absence of support from the state’s Water Resources Department, the local community, driven by pressing needs, has assumed responsibility for financing and building the protective structure. This grassroots effort underscores the vital role of community collaboration in tackling pressing environmental challenges.
Erosion has severely impacted the area, ravaging thousands of bighas of farmland across five villages and threatening agricultural productivity. These riverbank communities, facing significant losses, have mobilized to construct bamboo parkupiles to defend their remaining land and livelihoods.
Funding for this crucial project has been sourced from the modest personal contributions of community members and leaders of the collaborative organizations. The construction efforts operate as a labor donation campaign, led by Jiabharali Samaj Hitaishi Award laureate Kamisan Mili and the central Mishing National Struggle Association’s youth leader, Padeswar Mili.
