Urgent Action: Centre Takes Bold Step to Eliminate Dangerous Helmets Threatening Lives
New Delhi: The central government has initiated a nationwide crackdown on the sale of substandard helmets to enhance road safety for two-wheeler riders. District Collectors and District Magistrates have been mobilized by the Department of Consumer Affairs to tackle the proliferation of non-compliant helmets. Concerns about the quality of helmets, crucial for road safety, prompted this action, highlighting the danger posed by non-ISI certified variants. So far, 162 helmet manufacturing licenses have been annulled or expired, while 27 search and seizure operations have been launched to curb the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark and enforce quality controls, resulting in legal actions across various courts.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, helmet use is mandatory; however, reports reveal that non-BIS-certified helmets are being sold in roadside markets, posing severe safety risks and contributing to road accident fatalities. The government has emphasized the need for stringent measures against manufacturers without BIS licenses and those employing counterfeit ISI marks, along with retailers distributing these unsafe products. Consumers are advised to confirm a manufacturer’s BIS license via the BIS Care App or website.
Nidhi Khare, Secretary of Consumer Affairs, urged all stakeholders to actively partake in this imperative campaign for citizen safety. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing regulations and safeguarding public health and safety on the roads.
