Exciting Initiative: Corporation Begins Work on Life-Saving Pond to Combat East Velachery Flooding
The Chennai Corporation is ramping up flood prevention efforts in Velachery with new initiatives. Traditionally, the corporation desilts the six-vent culvert below the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) near Velachery station annually to prevent flooding by facilitating the flow of rainwater to the Pallikaranai marshland. However, this culvert, alongside the MRTS and Station Service Road, has hindered the free flow of rainwater from several east Velachery neighborhoods.
In contrast, the similar culvert serving west Velachery’s Veerangal Odai and Velachery Lake has been well-maintained each year. The Southern Railway has now transferred the maintenance responsibility of the Station Service Road to the Chennai Corporation, which has initiated large-scale flood prevention measures.
Based on a drone survey, a proposal has emerged to construct a massive pond, capable of holding 4 million cubic feet of rainwater, on vacant land belonging to revenue authorities. This pond, spanning 20 square meters, aims to expedite rainwater flow from neighborhoods like VGP Selva Nagar and Annai Indira Nagar into the marshland through the six-vent culvert. A similar expansive pond already exists on the opposite side of the culvert.
Moreover, the Chennai Corporation plans to renovate the macro canal along the Station Service Road, which connects to stormwater drains in these residential areas. Years of neglect have left the canal damaged, but repairs are underway to bolster the area’s flood resilience.
These initiatives reflect an intensified focus on enhancing water flow infrastructure, promising significant relief for Velachery residents during the monsoon season.
