Apple has unveiled the latest developer beta versions of its operating systems—iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2—ushering in a suite of advanced features ahead of next week’s public release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Marking a significant shift, these updates introduce Apple Intelligence features for the first time in a non-beta format, offering integrated writing tools, image cleanup, article summaries, and a new input method for Siri.
Developers testing the beta will have early access to additional features announced at Apple’s WWDC in June. These include Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, Image Wand, and ChatGPT integration. Apple Intelligence requires users to enable features through settings, including permissions for ChatGPT, which will enhance Siri’s functionality and serve as a tool within Writing Tools. This integration will allow Siri to access OpenAI for situations it can’t address immediately, such as providing recipes or planning trips.
Compose, a new addition to Writing Tools, will allow users to generate text responses, similar to the stand-alone ChatGPT platform, also supporting Apple’s and ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. The Image Playground feature will enable users to create images using prompts in various Apple apps, sticking to styles of animation and illustration to sidestep ethical concerns tied to photo realism.
Image Wand will transform user sketches into finished artwork and refine handwritten notes, while Genmoji will allow the generation of custom emojis from descriptions and personal photos. Visual Intelligence aims to rival Google Lens by scanning QR codes, summarizing texts, and providing contextual information such as restaurant reviews. It can also connect with Google’s shopping database and integrate ChatGPT for broader queries, without requiring a ChatGPT account.
