Historic Breakthrough: PM Modi and Xi Jinping Forge New Path to Peace in Kazan Amid Easing Border Tensions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to have a significant meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, during the forthcoming BRICS Summit. This encounter marks their first formal interaction in five years, coinciding with an agreement to ease border tensions.
Their discussions will focus on developments related to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, where both nations have agreed to resume regular patrolling. This dialogue follows a prolonged period of strained relations due to border confrontations, notably the Galwan clashes in June 2020.
The meeting’s importance was underlined by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who highlighted its potential in repairing bilateral ties. China’s Foreign Ministry also reported progress, indicating a resolution on the border dispute, with Lin Jian, a ministry spokesperson, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic and military communications.
Experts deem this meeting a pivotal moment for India-China relations. Foreign affairs analyst Robinder Nath Sachdev notes that Modi is expected to seek substantial outcomes, particularly concerning the trade imbalance. With bilateral trade at approximately USD 120 billion—India exporting USD 20 billion and importing USD 100 billion—Modi may push for China to lower tariffs and reduce trade barriers.
Past interactions between Modi and Xi in 2019, 2022, and 2023 have consistently underscored the importance of peace along the 3,500-kilometre India-China border. The Kazan meeting presents a crucial opportunity for addressing these enduring issues and exploring ways to stabilize their relationship. This development could lead to meaningful progress, enhancing diplomatic ties and potentially reshaping regional dynamics.
