Heartfelt Cry for Hope: Voices of Despair Emerge from ‘No Man’s Land’ – A Powerful Plea for Change
The Konyak Union (Myanmar) has issued a grave warning concerning the declining living standards in the Eastern Konyak Naga region, referred to as “No Man’s Land.” General Secretary K Akham Honwang highlighted the plight of the Naga communities, trapped between the NSCN, Indian paramilitary forces, and the Myanmar Junta since the independence of India and Myanmar in the late 1940s. Despite generations of habitation, these communities suffer from a profound lack of governmental support, with vital infrastructure like schools and health centers almost nonexistent. The Myanmar government has repeatedly ignored calls for development, leaving the area mired in conflict and neglect, according to Honwang.
The “No Man’s Land” label further marginalizes the Naga people, masking the region’s rich history and turning it into a militarized zone where cross-border violence is commonplace, destabilizing civilian life. The Naga leaders’ term “Base Areas,” while recognizing the community’s presence, underscores a still unresolved territorial battleground, where insurgent activities prevail over civilian needs.
Frustrated by the inaction of both Indian and Myanmar governments, Honwang criticized Naga political leaders, urging them to uphold true leadership principles and to shift their focus towards peace and unity rather than conflict. He lamented that the region, once a peaceful ancestral land, has become a war zone. Honwang called for a collective effort to address decades-long neglect, asserting that only through peace and unity can the Naga people hope to attain sovereignty.
Additionally, Honwang appealed for international awareness and intervention, urging the global community to recognize and help alleviate the longstanding issues faced by the Eastern Konyak Naga people. “Our people have suffered for too long,” he stated, emphasizing that the path to Naga sovereignty lies in harmony, not strife.
