Alarming Bomb Threats Paralyze 70 Flights in Just 6 Days; Delhi Police Urgently Seeks Social Media Assistance
This week, a wave of bomb threats has disrupted the aviation sector, affecting more than 70 domestic and international flights and prompting an urgent response from Delhi Police. Social media platforms, including X, are being utilized in the hunt for those responsible for the alarming messages, as authorities work to ensure safety and normalcy in air travel.
The crisis peaked on Saturday when over 30 flights across airlines such as Air India, Vistara, IndiGo, Akasa Air, SpiceJet, Star Air, and Alliance Air were targeted by threats. These incidents have caused significant disruptions at airports, impacting both passengers and operations. A notable case involved a bomb threat on a Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight with 180 passengers, resulting in the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) and spurring further investigations at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Delhi Police have intensified their efforts, enlisting a specialized team including the cyber cell and the Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations (IFSO). Investigators believe the suspect might have employed a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or dark web tools to create several accounts used in disseminating the threats. These social media accounts have been suspended upon the police’s request, as they seek to trace the culprits’ IP addresses.
In response to these security challenges, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) convened with airline CEOs and representatives to address the rising threat issue. Discussions focused on implementing stringent regulations to deter future hoaxes and improve safety standards. The civil aviation ministry is considering introducing measures to blacklist offenders by placing them on a no-fly list.
These targeted efforts underscore the determination of authorities to swiftly resolve these disruptions, ensuring passenger safety while maintaining public trust in aviation security.
