Tel Aviv, October 19 (IANS): The recent autopsy on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the head during an Israeli intelligence-led raid in southern Gaza. Sinwar, who headed Hamas’s politburo, was discovered deceased by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in Rafah’s Tel al-Sultan area. The IDF’s 828 Brigade found his body, which was later identified using DNA profiling. This was substantiated with DNA records from Sinwar’s previous incarceration in Israel, where he was held before release in a 2011 prisoner swap.
According to Chen Kugel, chief pathologist at Israel’s National Center of Forensic Medicine, and as reported by CNN, DNA confirmation was necessary as initial dental record checks were inconclusive. It was also noted that IDF soldiers severed one of Sinwar’s fingers for DNA verification, sparking discussions as online footage showed Sinwar’s body with all fingers initially intact, then later with one missing.
Videos trending on social media depict Israeli forces examining a hideout, where Sinwar’s body, with significant head damage, was located. Reports indicate that prior to the ground operation, Israeli forces targeted the hideout with a tank shell.
Sinwar, known for orchestrating the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that claimed over 1,200 lives, has left Hamas strategizing over his successor. The organization is expected to appoint a new leader operating from outside Gaza, with Sinwar’s brother, Mohammad Sinwar, as a potential candidate.
