Shock Announcement: AIUDF’s Bold Decision to Contest Just One Seat in Assam Bye-Elections, Declares Chief Badruddin Ajmal
In Guwahati, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal announced that his party will contest only one seat in the upcoming by-elections for Assam’s five Assembly constituencies, scheduled for November 13. Ajmal stated that the AIUDF would field a candidate solely in the Samaguri constituency, reversing an earlier announcement to contest three seats, including Dholai and Bongaigaon. Ajmal was decisively defeated by Congress’ Rakibul Hussain in the Lok Sabha elections. Hussain, the sitting representative of Samaguri since 2001, will have his son Tanjil Hussain contest on behalf of Congress this time around.
The BJP is targeting the Samaguri seat to dislodge Congress, with high-profile leaders actively campaigning. Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah expressed confidence in winning, describing the dissatisfaction with Congress’ long-standing track record in the area. A recent altercation was reported in Samaguri involving BJP and Congress supporters, which Mallabaruah dismissed as an internal Congress conflict.
State BJP Chief Bhabesh Kalita confidently predicted a sweep for the ruling alliance in all five contested seats. He highlighted that the vacancies arose as MLAs transitioned to the Lok Sabha following a significant mandate for the BJP. The political landscape in Samaguri and other constituencies is heating up as the by-election date approaches.
