Mamata’s Urgent Action: Transforming Healthcare Infrastructure Amid Emotional Doctor’s Protest
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conducted a review meeting at her Kalighat residence with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Health Secretary N.S. Nigam, focusing on enhancing healthcare infrastructure, especially the safety and security measures at state-run medical colleges and hospitals. The meeting, held on October 17, 2024, aimed to address ongoing concerns following the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. This incident has sparked state-wide unrest, with junior doctors engaging in protests, including a fast-unto-death demanding justice and infrastructure improvements. Their demands include the establishment of a centralized referral system, a bed vacancy monitoring system, enhanced CCTV provisions, and increased police protection, particularly with the recruitment of permanent female officers. Following the meeting, the Chief Secretary scheduled a gathering with hospital principals and MSVPs to discuss the next steps. These measures come after a lengthy protest that ended after 42 days in September, following the government’s assurance to address the demands.
